Analysis of the Development Situation of the Domestic Passenger Car Market in 2010, with a Rapid and Comprehensive Growth in Demand

In 2010, the overall operating environment of the passenger car industry was good, the mileage of expressways opened up further, the enthusiasm of urban residents for travel remained high, and the intrinsic quality of passenger car products continued to increase. This led to a rapid increase in demand for the passenger car market. According to data compiled by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers on 98 bus manufacturers, passenger car sales exceeded 400,000 for the first time in 2010, the highest growth rate in the past five years. In general, the bus market in 2010 generally showed the following characteristics:

Demand for bus rapid growth, and the performance of large passenger cars is particularly prominent

In 2010, the number of passenger car sales reached 414,500, an increase of 27.66% year-on-year, with a production and sales ratio of 99.28%. Among the main varieties of passenger cars, the growth rate of large passenger vehicles is the most obvious, with a total of 75,800 vehicles sold, an increase of 43.15% year-on-year; the number of light passenger vehicles is the fastest, total sales of 260,400 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 28.06%; the growth rate of medium-sized passenger vehicles is relatively low. A total of 78,300 vehicles were sold, a year-on-year increase of 14.47%.

From the point of view of production and sales, light passenger vehicles were the highest, reaching 99.77%; large and medium-sized passenger cars reached 98.31% and 98.49% respectively, slightly lower than the previous year. In addition, from the perspective of the breakdown of the nature of fuels, diesel passenger cars and petrol passenger cars are significantly better than the same period of last year, of which diesel vehicles have grown faster. In 2010, sales of diesel vehicles were 280,400, an increase of 32.90% year-on-year; sales of gasoline vehicles were 120,100, an increase of 17.53% year-on-year; sales of other fuel vehicles were 144,000, an increase of 21.42% year-on-year (see Table 1 and Figure 1).

Demand in the passenger car market in all six regions has grown in all directions, with the highest contribution to the growth of tourist coaches

In 2010, with the gradual recovery of passenger car demand, the six major regions in China have also changed their trend of sluggish growth in the previous year, and they have shown rapid growth. Compared with the same period of last year, except for the increase in the southwest and northwest regions, which was slightly lower than the same period of the previous year, the growth rate in other regions was higher than that in the previous year. The growth rates in North China and South China were faster. In 2010, sales in Central and South China were 68,400, an increase of 39.64%; sales in North China were 59,200, up 32.05% year-on-year; sales in East China were 114,600, an increase of 27.52% year-on-year; sales in Southwest China were 38,300, an increase of 14.18% year-on-year The sales in the northeast region reached 34,200 units, an increase of 11.77% year-on-year; the sales in the northwestern region were 25,400 units, an increase of 18.17% year-on-year.

In 2010, the demand for articulated passenger cars was the only decline from the performance of each model of passenger car segment. The other varieties were better than the same period, of which the growth rate of tourist buses was the fastest. In 2010, the number of tourist bus sales was 24,300, an increase of 56.27%; small passenger car sales were 170,100, an increase of 25.75%; urban passenger car sales were 63,700, an increase of 15.04%; long-distance bus sales were 77,100, an increase of 29.63%. The number of private buses sold was 40,800, an increase of 44.03% year-on-year; 85 buses were articulated, a decrease of 49.70% year-on-year.

The backbone enterprises have maintained their vitality, and the top 5 companies’ market share has exceeded 50%

In 2010, the backbone enterprises in the industry were steadily taking the lead in the industry. The top ten companies remained unchanged compared to the previous year. They are still Brilliance Jinbei, Jiangling, Zhengzhou Yutong, Nanjing Iveco, Beiqi Futian, Jinlong United, Xiamen Golden Brigade, (Suzhou) Golden Dragon, Shaolin and Zhongtong. Among them, the cumulative sales of the top five companies exceeded 230,600, and the market share reached 55.63%.

During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, key enterprises in the industry have experienced wave-like development as well as the entire industry. In 2010, the top ten companies sold a total of 317,800 vehicles, accounting for 76.67% of the total bus sales, and the occupancy rate increased by nearly 3% compared with 2006 (see Figure 4 for details).

In 2011, the country’s macroeconomic environment was more complex and full of uncertainties. The pace of adjustment and optimization of the industry structure of the bus industry was also accelerating. This will promote the continuous development and introduction of products that are closer to market needs. At the same time, as a rational industry, the future development of the bus industry will surely continue to follow the wave-like progress, but the future is still full of light.
