Aerosol hygroscopicity is a key parameter for evaluating aerosol radiative forcing and exploring aerosol environmental effects. The aerosol optical hygroscopic growth characteristic is one of the important methods to characterize the aerosol hygroscopicity, but the existing methods can only measure the extinction or scattering hygroscopic growth characteristics separately, it is difficult to obtain the aerosol optical hygroscopic growth characteristics comprehensively and accurately.
Researchers Zhao Weixiong and Ph.D. Xu Xuezhe, etc., first combined broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technology with integrating spheres in 2014, developed the world's first cavity enhanced albedo spectrometer, which realized aerosol multi-parameter optics (extinction, scattering, Absorption, single-scatter albedo) in situ, simultaneous measurement. Subsequently, based on the broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy technology, a hygroscopic extinction spectrometer was developed, which was first applied to the measurement of the aerosol extinction hygroscopic growth characteristics.
This time, on the basis of the existing work, in order to fully obtain the aerosol optical hygroscopic growth characteristics, the research group combined a cavity enhanced albedo spectrometer with a rapid humidity adjustment system to develop a new aerosol optical hygroscopic growth characteristic measuring device . The device can realize the simultaneous measurement of the hygroscopic growth factor of aerosol extinction, scattering, absorption and single-scatter albedo, and can quickly obtain the corresponding hygroscopic growth curve. Its accuracy and reliability have reached the international advanced level. Carbon aerosol radiative forcing provides a key technical means.
From October to November 2018, the instrument participated in large-scale comprehensive observation experiments in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and obtained data on the multi-parameter optical hygroscopic growth characteristics of aerosols in Guangzhou. Compared with the existing method, the device not only has complete optical parameters, is accurate and reliable, but also has low cost, good stability, and is suitable for long-term observation of stations, and has good scientific research and business application prospects.
