Mitsubishi Rayon said on August 4 that its new carbon fiber plant with a total investment of 12 billion yen and an annual production capacity of 2,700 tons in Otake, Japan has been officially produced in June this year. Mitsubishi Rayon Company resumed construction of the plant in June 2010. Previously due to the poor business environment and the declining carbon fiber market, the company temporarily suspended construction of the plant in March 2009. Mitsubishi Rayon said that the new plant will meet the growing demand for various industrial applications such as wind turbine blades, pressure vessels and automobiles. The factory mainly produces high performance large tow carbon fiber, mainly used in the industrial field. Mitsubishi Rayon expects that total carbon fiber demand this year will reach about 30,000 tons, of which the demand for large tow carbon fiber is 8,000 tons. The use of large tow carbon fibers in wind turbine blades and automotive structural components is growing.
